Awareness training on indigenous realities for school staff

PIWASEHA – INDIGENOUS CULTURES AND REALITIES

The Piwaseha – Indigenous Cultures and Realities training's objectives are to acquire a better understanding of the past and of the present realities to demonstrate opennes and accepting behaviours in regards to cultural differences. The training also promotes awareness of the different obstacles that hinder communication and relationships and how to overcome them.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

• Acquire a better understanding of the past and of the present realities to better accompany First Nations, Inuit and Metis populations
• Be able to demonstrate openness and accepting behaviour in regards to cultural differences
• Become aware of the different obstacles that hinder communications and relations with Indigenous peoples
• Recognize the impact of negative perceptions on the self-esteem of Indigenous peoples
• Become aware of personal cultural values and consider Indigenous identities in regards to intercultural relations
• Be able to compare your personal culture and Indigenous cultures

MATINAMAGEWIN - SHARING

Matinamagewin is a training designed to improve the cultural competencies of school staff, promote greater harmony, and create an environment conducive to the learning and success of Indigenous students. Using concrete examples and content aimed specifically at educators, this training can be adapted to the needs and realities of different schools.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

• Raise awareness among school staff of the importance of cultural safety in their practice
• Promote the integration of concepts and practices from a variety of Indigenous cultures to improve understanding, reduce prejudice, and promote harmony
• Get to know Indigenous students better
• Promote pedagogical practices that make sense in an Indigenous context
• Improve communication and cooperation between the school, parents, and Indigenous stakeholders (community, elders, friendship centers, band councils, etc.).
• Meet specific needs identified by the school.

CONTENT

• Timeline of events that marked Aboriginal education in Canada and Quebec
• Cultural competency, humility and safety
• Introduction to decolonization in education
• Introduction to Indigenous pedagogies and culturally relevant practices
• Resources for valuing and promoting Indigenous perspectives and cultures in the classroom
• The various roles of school personnel in creating an environment conducive to the success of Indigenous students
• Community-parent-school communication and partnership
• Attitudes to develop and traps to avoid.
