Roots Under the Footlights!

Rouyn-Noranda, June 28th 2011 — After Texas, Israel, The Netherlands, Georgia and Spain, it is now Canada’s turn to organize the 6th International Symposium on Root Development. The Symposium will be hosted by the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Temiscamingue (UQAT), Amos Campus, under the general theme of “Future Directions in Root Research." Nearly 75 experts coming from all around the world will be gathered to exchange and enhance the advancement of knowledge in root development. The Symposium will take place from August 7th to August 11th 2011, at Hotel des Eskers, in Amos (Québec).

Internationally well-known specialist in silviculture and tree farming, UQAT research Professor Dr. Annie DesRochers is the President of the organizing committee of this international event. « Due to the difficulties associated to research methologies for the study of root development, the importance of roots is not well known. High quality and specialized research has however been done for many decades, and there is still a lot of work to be done », says the research professor with enthusiasm.

Leading Experts in Root Development

For Johanne Jean, rector of UQAT, the fallouts are undeniable: «Research potential in root development is immense. Discoveries will impact research fields in agri-food, forestry or mining. It is a research area in which UQAT wants to shine.»
